8 New Zealand businesses who are winning with their first impressions.

“You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.”

90% of us are discovering new products, brands and services on social media 90% of that 90% have gone on to purchase. The first thing we do after discovery is check out the businesses profile - either the Facebook page or Instagram profile.

So it’s important to treat your profiles like your shop window. Treat it as if someone is walking past and you have just a few seconds to convey what your business is, what you do, your style, your purpose, the people etc. If someone likes what they see upon landing, they’ll follow and you have yourselves a potential new customer and maybe even over time a loyal brand advocate (#goals).

So as the year kicks off it’s a good idea to take a look at your social profiles and imagine you’re a potential customer visiting for the first time. What can you tell them about your business or organisation that is going to make people like you and want to follow you? Is it your origin story, the people, your values, your why? And how do you want them to act when they land there?

Here are 8 (mostly) Kiwi profiles that are making their first impressions count.

Offcut

I love this business from Christchurch. Aside from the BEAUTIFUL photography on their Instagram profile, they have a concise bio which states what they do. They invite you to join their war (become part of their community), and they make you feel good about becoming a customer because they plant a tree! Emotional reward right there.

To top it all off, they give you a reason to follow so you can see their next drop of caps this Friday.

Rotorua Canopy Tours

Rotorua Canopy Tours have a beautiful cover video (click through to see) that puts you right into the experience and makes you want to book a ticket immediately . They’ve also used the Book Now call to action button in case you decide to do just that.

Reviews are crucial when making travel experience decisions and RTC have set up their page to put their glowing recommendations front and centre in the top tab.

Karma Cola

They hit you with their colourful branding making it easy to recognise when you’re reaching in the fridge at the dairy.

Click through (on image) and check out their ‘Our Story’ section - it’s a succinct brand summary which puts the karma in the cola “Good for our planet, our growers and good for you”.

They also have their shop as the first tab, showcasing their drinks and merch - prompting you to browse and maybe even become a customer straight away.

Well Made Clothes

No wondering about what this business does with their ‘what’ smack bang in the centre of the Facebook cover photo.

Their ‘About’ section also does a great job at explaining their ‘why’ and ‘how’ while educating the reader about the issues of the fashion industry.

Bearded Builder

The business name caught my attention and his story made me want to hire him. Introducing himself, his history and his purpose. I particularly love the last line “We all have the ability to teach and leave something for the next generation”.

In service based businesses often it’s the people, their personalities and stories that make people go from being aware a business exists to wanting to become a client & this is a good example.

Lamington Socks

Award winning! Who wouldn’t want to buy award winning merino socks? They also stay on and are made in NZ - 3 good reasons to become a customer clearly described in the bio.

They also give people a way to both browse and generate user generated content with an easy brand hashtag. By encouraging UGC you are creating an army of brand ambassadors spreading your brand for you - it’s free and it’s powerful!

Happi Earth

This is actually an Australian company but it’s a great example of incentivising word of mouth by giving a way a years supply in exchange for some UGC (user generated content).

I also like how they address a common misconception (and barrier to purchase) that organic products are always expensive by giving a per wash cost breakdown.

And they plant trees too!

Also 👌🏻use of emojis.

Willow and Wolfe

They have ticked the 3 most important boxes.

A great description - their choice of words really conveys quality.

A good brand # - to encourage brand ambassadors.
